Basement Waterproofing with Holmes and Holmes

RCC Waterproofing was the first choice for Mike Holmes and his son Mike Jr. (MJ) when basement waterproofing was required for Jr’s bachelor bungalow.  And is was all captured during the filming of the popular HGTV series Holmes and Holmes: Moving Up In The World.

The Dust Settled And Foundation Cracks Were Discovered

After Mike Jr’s home was gutted and the demolition was complete, various cracks were exposed in the basement foundation.  RCC General manager, Anthony Parolin, was called in to evaluate the situation and offer advice.  It was obvious – there were some major issues with the home’s foundation.

When Mike Holmes Sr. posed the question “If this was your house, would you do it from the inside or from the outside?” Anthony’s answer was what both Mike Holmes and those in the construction business already knew, exterior waterproofing is the only way to GUARANTEE the basement will stay dry for the long term.

It was a hard pill for MJ to swallow.  His budget was already stretched to the limit.  Ultimately, with some pressure from his dad, he agreed that spending the money on exterior waterproofing would be the wisest choice.

First Step: Seal The Smaller Foundation Cracks From The Inside

Since the ground was still frozen at the time of the initial inspection, the RCC crew had to put the excavation on hold until the spring when the ground thawed.  Mike Jr. was anxious to seal those cracks in the basement foundation wall and asked RCC to do a Polyurethane injection to fill in the smaller cracks and keep moisture from coming through those cracks.

As the renovation continued, the basement was framed and insulated.  Unfortunately, before the ground thawed Mike Jr. discovered water in the basement.  With water in the basement, it was impossible to continue with the renovation – the exterior waterproofing and excavation needed to be done ASAP.

Second Step: Waterproof The Home From The Outside

Mike Jr. was anxious to complete the waterproofing to stop the water from entering his basement.  RCC was quickly on site and started digging.  Within hours, the RCC crew had the excavation complete and was ready to install the waterproofing system.

The Value Of Peace Of Mind

Although it was hard for MJ to dip into some of the budget earmarked for other projects, the backyard oasis could wait. Like his dad, he knew that the cost of exterior waterproofing was necessary to “make it right” and was worth the peace of mind. His home was going to remain dry and safe for himself and his new fiance Lisa for a long, long time – guaranteed!
